Walt Brown & Addison McGrath

My first encounter with the Foundation for Blind Children centers around a story that I’d like to share with you…
One sunny Phoenix day in April, Walt called me and said, “Where are you?”
I replied, “I just stepped out of a meeting with my mentor, I am on 22nd and Highland”.
Walt added, “So am I… what side of the intersection are you on?”
We were at the same light. (Coincidence #1)
Then we saw each other and Walt informed me that he had a meeting at the Foundation for Blind Children, and invited me to join him.
Without hesitation I replied, “Of course”.
Well, then there was as slight problem, he was dressed in a suit and I had on my typical rainbow sandals jeans and a tee. But it just so happened that I had a dress and heels in my car from an interview earlier that week. (Coincidence #2) So I slipped those on and off we went.
We were greeted by the kind familiar faces of Jim Pierson and Marc Ashton as well as all of the volunteers and staff. As we walked around the beautiful facility, we had a chance to play with some absolutely amazing children. The energy and thrill on their faces as they played and learned warmed our hearts. We both lit up when we saw the smile on Anna Pierson’s face when we walked into the room with her father Jim. He didn’t even need to say a word; she could just sense his presence. It was so beautiful and we will never forget that vibrant smile. These brave little tadpoles taught us some powerful lessons that day! With tears running down our faces, we looked at each other and understood the bigger meaning to love. As William Shakespeare once said, “Love is Blind”.
We were blessed to have these children touch our hearts, and we can only hope to have the opportunity to do the same for them.
Walt and I had lunch with Jim Pierson and his wonderful wife. They were telling us about the upcoming event (Night for Sight) that happens to be on the exact same night as our wedding (Coincidence #3). We wish we could be there, but hopefully it will come as a blessing that we can team up to raise funds for the Foundation.
We are so impressed with the FBC’s ability to help children live a normal life and provide them skills that allow them to contribute in our world! We want to encourage you to help make great things HAPPEN for the children of FBC!
Walt, Wally and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts, as the FBC gives opportunities beyond these children and adults’ wildest dreams!
