REFRESHABLE BRAILLE DISPLAYS

WHAT IS A REFRESHABLE BRAILLE DISPLAY?

A refreshable braille display is a device which displays the text from the computer's monitor in braille in real-time. The term "refreshable braille" is derived from the fact that the braille on the display constantly changes as the user peruses the text on the screen. It is controlled by the Speech output software program. It connects to the computer via serial, parallel or USB port. A CHARACTER is displayed within a single braille cell. Each cell consists of eight dots. The number of cells on a display ranges from twenty to eighty DEPENDING ON THE BRAND AND MODEL. They range in price from approximately $5,000.00 to $11,500.00.
FOR WHOM IS THIS TECHNOLOGY APPROPRIATE?

Anyone who uses a computer via speech output, cannot read print visually and can read braille will benefit from the use of a refreshable braille display. A braille display provides more information to a user more efficiently than speech output alone. It also gives the user a better understanding of the spacial layout of the information presented on the computer monitor. Additionally, some people retain information better when it is presented in written form, rather than by auditory means. This is true of braille for some users even though the written form is tactual rather than visual. Generally speaking, even though the cost is greater, braille displays which have the greatest number of cells allow the user to use the computer more efficiently.
