Braille is a vital communication tool for people who are blind or visually impaired, allowing them to read and write through touch. It is more than a method of writing; it is a tool for independence. But what is Braille? Here are 5 facts about braille to help understand why it’s so important.
1. Braille is not a Language. It’s a Code.
Braille is a system of raised dots that represent letters, numbers, and punctuation marks. Each character is made up of up to 6 dots arranged in a rectangular cell. Every combination represents something in the printed text but allows a reader who is visually impaired to read through their fingertips.
2. Braille Symbols Can Represent More Than One Letter
While there is a braille symbol for every letter in the alphabet, there are others that represent more. Because braille needs to be large enough to feel, it takes up a lot of physical space. That is why it takes every opportunity to shorten things. Symbols such as [ER] [CH] or [TH] which are such common letter combinations help accomplish this goal.
3: There are Many Ways to Create Braille Text
At the Foundation for Blind Children, our students learn different ways to write braille. From using a stylus to manually press each individual dot into the paper to using a mechanical braille writer and digital braille displays, there are tons of options to learn, read, and write.
4. There are Over 130 Languages that Use Braille
Braille is a worldwide system that has been adopted with some differences for many languages. It is based on the Latin alphabet, but languages such as Cantonese, Japanese, and Hindi all have variations that build on Braille. Everything from accents to tonal differences can be represented, allowing people all over the world who are visually impaired to have access to tactile writing.
5. Braille is a Key to Independence
Braille is much more than a writing system. It allows people who cannot read written text to access infinite worlds of information. It is how FBC students learn to read, and it is what allows them to be connected. Braille is an incredible tool for the blind and visually impaired community.
