Story Time

Every year, on March 2nd, classrooms, libraries, and communities across the United States celebrate Read Across America and the importance of reading. This annual event, organized by the National Education Association (NEA), aims to promote literacy and encourage a love for reading among people of all ages.

At Foundation for Blind Children, we celebrated Read Across America and the importance of reading with two-weeks of fun. We had parents, staff, and volunteers join our classes to read some of our favorite books. It all culminated in a special Read on the Green, where our incoming CEO, Jared Kittelson, read a story to the students.

Origins of Read Across America

Read Across America takes place around March 2 because it is, first and foremost, a celebration of the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

The Importance of Reading

Literacy is more than just the ability to read and write; it is the foundation of knowledge, communication, and empowerment. From understanding basic instructions to navigating complex information, literacy skills are essential for success in all aspects of life.

For children, developing strong literacy skills early on sets the stage for academic achievement and future opportunities. Reading opens doors to new worlds, sparks imagination, and fosters critical thinking skills.

Read Across FBC

AT FBC, we work every day to promote literacy in our students. Events like Read Across America help us promote reading and literacy. With our Library, we seek to increase access to reading materials for students who are visually impaired, so every child can read to learn, to imagine, and to grow. You can help us accomplish this and ensure our continued success.
