Where Do I Start? Blindness and Vision Loss First Steps

Did you recently receive a vision loss diagnosis? Did your child or someone you know? Losing your sight or finding out that your child is losing their sight is scary, but we at Foundation for Blind Children are here to tell you that it is going to be ok. We serve all ages, from newborns to adults who lose their vision later in life. This may be an overwhelming time, but there are two things to know before anything: This isn’t the end of the world, and you aren’t alone.

The hardest part of a vision loss diagnosis is often simply the unknown. You may not know anything about what it’s like to be blind or to raise someone who is blind. You may not even know someone who is blind. If you are feeling lost, keep reading, and we will explain a little about FBC and what your next steps are.

A vision loss diagnosis does not mean life is over. It is not a barrier; it just means that things need to be done differently. FBC students have played varsity football, graduated from medical school, and climbed the tallest mountain in Africa. We teach our students how to adapt so they can do whatever they want to do.

FBC is here to help at every step. We will help get you connected to any resources you may need. We provide training, technology, and support for our students to be successful and independent. Our counselor will guide you through the process, making sure you have everything you need along the way.

Click here to request help from FBC, and we will be in contact as soon as possible. You can also call us at 602-331-1470.

My Child is Blind or Visually Impaired

Whether you just found out your baby is visually impaired or you have a child who is losing their sight, FBC has programs to help. In our Infant and Toddler (Early Intervention) Program, we will teach new parents how to help their children, so they can learn to understand the world. Our preschool and elementary schools develop the skills students need to be successful, academically, socially, and physically. Older kids can have tons of fun while learning in SHARP, our adaptive sports and recreation program. Later, our programs for teenagers focus on preparing them to live independently, whether that means getting their first job, going to college, or living alone for the first time. FBC students are given every tool they need to reach their full potential.
